Lesson 45: Master Zhangs' Style Birds

Henry's teacher Zhang Zhengyin(1912-1995) and grand teacher Chang Shu-chi(Zhang Shu-qi, 1900-1957) were both very good at painting birds in the Chinese manner. Following their easy to follow learning system, you will learn how to draw the basic shape and positions of a bird in an in person class with Steve Lucas, an exhibiting artist from Arizona, at Henry's studio in Los Angeles. Then, Henry will take you to China to see some amazing birds' paintings by master Zhang Zhengyin at a gallery run by one of his last students in Nanjing. Inspired by a masterpiece by teacher Zhang seen in the gallery Henry and his Australian student Leasha did a collaborative bird painting study right in front of the original.

Assignment

Assignments

1) According to Master Chang Shu-ch'i(Zhang Shuqi)'s diagrams, outline different birds positions from the egg shape. Notice the back and check division in different perspective, the head and tail movement, and the wings. 

2) Use assignment #1 as reference paint the birds in ink starting from the back, chest and belly; then draw the head; add wings and the tail; finish with claws.  

3) Paint a bird on a tree branch by copying one of master Zhang Zhengyin's painting samples. 

 

Diagrams and finished paintings seen in the video are included in the handouts.
