Lesson 48: Gongbi Portrait from Photography

Have you ever thought of doing a portrait of yourself or your loved ones in CBP? This lesson will show you the steps of painting a fine-line gongbi portrait. Just taking a snapshot with a smart phone or a digital camera, portrait painting has been made so easy as 1-2-3:  contour tracing, ink shading and color washing. Assignments

1)Take a digital photo of the person or yourself, or finding a good picture from your past albums. You may posterize it in PhotoShop (it is under image/adjustments/posterize) or upload it to the class forum for help if you don't have PhotoShop. If the light source in the picture is from one side with proper shadows and contract, you may need not to edit it in PS. Just make a print copy for tracing purpose. Make a contour drawing with pencil. Then draw a fine-line portrait with dark ink. You may create several contour drawing with cicada wing paper.

2) Following the steps in the workshop video to add shading with 2-brush wash technique. After the ink dries, apply skin color from high to low plains, Wait previous layer to dry before add more layers of colors. Pay special attention to the eyes and necessary details that reflect the personality and spirit. Stop at 50-70% before you think it is finished.  

 

Diagrams and finished paintings seen in the video are included in the handouts.
