Lesson 29: Phalaenopsis Orchid

In this lesson you will learn how to paint phalaenopsis orchid in all three styles of Chinese brush painting: Xieyi(spontaneous), Gongbi(fine-line) and mogu(boneless). I have used live flower as model in a workshop setting with three international students. Through this lesson you will learn the characteristics of three different types of rice papers - unsized Xuan paper for xieyi, sized cicada wing paper for gongbi and sized single xuan paper for mogu. In the end of the class you will see both wet and dry mounting demos, and how to mount the finished paintings onto silk scrolls.

Demos and Assignments

1: Gongbi Style Phalaenopsis
Please try to make a copy of the outlined version of the orchid and you may create your own color of the flowers based on a real flower or pictures.
2: Xieyi or Spontaneous Style Orchid
Please try to paint a free-style phalaenopsis orchid based on the masterpiece by Yang Zhiguang or our model flower.
3: Mogu(boneless) Style Orchid
Try to adop the terashikomi techinique with dripping water or white color.Handout and finished painting as seen in the video are included in the handouts.
