In this unique lesson you will learn how to use digitally enhanced photography as a helpful tool to paint Chinese brush painting. Jerry Berry has been a photographer for 45 years. In this live workshop koi he shares with us the trick how he get rid of the background in his fish pond photo and make it to look like a sumi-e. Then, Henry will show you how to paint vivid koi fish in calligraphic strokes and create impressionistic background with plexiglass monoprint.

Assignments

If it is possible use your own koi fish photo or use Jerry's koi photos http://butch.pixu.com/ as inspirations to paint koi fish pon.

Practice the strokes on magic cloth or scrap paper before you do on rice paper or mulberry paper.

Try to generate impressionistic effect with crinkled paper, plexiglass or any other means. Don't add background if you think it is better without it.

 

Diagrams and finished paintings seen in the video are included in the handouts.
