Materials: Sumi ink and watercolor on colored Xuan rice paper (unmounted, mounting service available). 

It was still New Year's Eve as I painted a live white camellia called “Chanel” in my backyard (plein air) as a New Year's greeting to celebrate 2024 (we are in PST time zone so it is one day behind most of the world). The title inscription reads "True water has no fragrance"( 真水無香) .

The story of Chanel and camellias originated when lady Chanel pinned a white camellia on her belt in 1913. The simple temperament, layered shape, purity and tenacious vitality of camellias (camellias can even bloom proudly in winter) made Chanel deeply fascinated, and she regarded camellias as her favorite flowers: even became the brand's mark.
