Lesson 51: Bubble Eye and Oranda Goldfish

(*To join Henry Li's online Chinese brush painting class, please click here . )

This lesson took a very long time to put  together. As early as I was in China in the early 80s I fell in love with this goldfish painting style done by Pan Jinhui, a Chinese brush painting artist who was very famous with his beautiful fantail goldfish with bubble eyes. Master Pan was a friend of my teacher Zhang's and I have seen their collaborated paintings but I never met him. I have always wanted to learn how to paint those waving fantails but it was so difficult to do. In 2015 I spent more than a month in Nanjing and I finally found a friend who introduced me to Mr Zhou Kecheng, who was a student of master Pan and is specialized in painting goldfish in his teacher's style. In front of our video camera Mr Zhou showed us all the secrets passed down from his teacher. For beginners Mr Zhou suggested to start with a simple style, so in the second part of this lesson we will learn how to paint orando goldfish step by step  based on an entry level painting textbook for children, which I have found very helpful for adult students as well.

Assignments

This is the most difficult lesson in terms of Chinese brush painting skill. Use magic cloth to practice goldfish tail strokes 100-500 times at least before use rice paper to paint. Otherwise you will exhaust all your rice supply on them. Don't expect yourself to perfect this technique in hours or days but keep practicing and enjoy every little progress you are making. After this lesson painting orchid and bamboo is like a piece of a cake. Here are some tips that may help.

1) Paint the oranda goldfish first if you are a beginner.

2) Fan tail goldfish: Create an outlined stroke guide of the fish sample you are trying to copy. You may draw it with a pencil and put it under the rice paper; or, use carbon paper to transfer the stroke guides to the magic cloth to practice.

3) Pay attention on composition as always.Paint two, three or five fish with a story and find a good  composition from the reference paintings that you like to copy.

Diagrams and finished paintings seen in the video are included in the handouts.
