Lesson 49: Zodiac Monkey with Datong Xu

Happy 2016, the Chinese new year of the monkey! let us learn how to paint a monkey from our guest professor Datong Xu in Nanjing, China. Datong was born in the year of fire monkey 60 years ago and he has studied Chinese calligraphy when he was very young from master Lin Sanzhi, who was considered the best grass style calligrapher in 20th century. Datong's was inspired by a line from a Tang Dynasty poem which reads "cold monkeys drink water giving a shake to the withered vine." This was a metaphor describing the brush strokes of cursive style calligraphy by Monk Huaisu. In this monkey painting demo Datong turned this poetic image into a masterpiece of art with his expertise in both Chinese painting and calligraphy. In the end of this video lesson you will also see how this painting was mounted into a beautiful silk hanging scroll by Henry and Victoria in an eight step process.

Assignments

Make a "cold monkey" painting based on the Tang poem 

"Idea comes first" is so very important in Chinese brush painting process. Datong has developed his idea from this line of a Tang poem "cold monkey drink water giving a shake to the withered vine"(寒猿饮水撼枯藤), please study his monkey painting video and write a review or comment on what do you feel about his interpretation of this poetic image. What kind of mood the poem suggests? What brush strokes and color theme theme he used to paint the "withered vine"? Does the gesture of the monk give a shake to the vine"? Try to keep the imagery poem in mind when you create your own "cold monkey' painting (you copy Datong's interpretation if you like.)
