Date & Time: Tuesday, February 17, 2026 (Chinese New Year’s Day), 9:00–12:30 PST. Live on Zoom with forever access to class recording.
Celebrate Chinese New Year’s Day 2026 with a special Gongbi fine‑line painting workshop on Heavenly Bamboo (nandina) led by Victoria. This graceful shrub, with its delicate foliage and clusters of glowing red berries, is cherished in East Asian cultures as a symbol of good fortune, prosperity, and protection, making it a perfect subject for welcoming the Year of the Horse.
In this 3.5‑hour class, Victoria will guide you through the complete Gongbi process, from transferring a refined line drawing to inking with ultra‑fine brushes and building up transparent color washes to create luminous berries and elegant leaves. You will learn how to control contour lines so delicate they resemble silk threads, and how to layer mineral and plant‑based pigments to achieve depth, volume, and subtle shading without losing the clarity of each form. We will pay particular attention to the rhythm of overlapping leaves and the roundness of each berry, using careful color gradation and soft edges to evoke freshness and vitality.
Alongside painting, Victoria will introduce the calligraphic title “天竹迎春” (“Heavenly Bamboo Welcomes Spring”), explaining its poetic meaning and how Heavenly Bamboo imagery conveys wishes for turning hardship into blessing and inviting auspicious energy into the home. You will see demonstrations of writing this four‑character phrase in four major styles—standard, walking, running, and clerical—so you can choose a style to complement your finished painting.
The class is suitable for both beginners and experienced artists: newcomers can comfortably follow the prepared outline and clear, step‑by‑step demonstrations, while returning students can deepen their skill in meticulous linework, multi‑layer washes, and integrating calligraphy with image in the Gongbi tradition. By the end of the workshop, you will complete an elegant Heavenly Bamboo painting, signed with your own calligraphy, ready to display as a New Year blessing or offer as a meaningful seasonal gift.
