Lesson 52: Zodiac Rooster

2017 will be the year of the rooster. There is an old Chinese saying "Plan your entire year in the spring, and plan your whole day in the morning." Well, the first part of this lesson was actually shot in the spring of 2016 in Nanjing, when I went back to China to select my old paintings for my 40-year retrospective,  with our guest artists Datong and Leasha. The second part was from the video recordings of workshops and demos during my artist residence at UWMC in Wausau, Wisconsin. I would like to thank Datong Xu,  Leasha Harrison,  art prof Diana Budde and her students at UWMC,  workshop participants at Center for Visual Arts in Wausau, WI for their inspirations and contributions to this lesson on the zodiac rooster. 

 

Assignments

1) Learn from Datong's demos and Leasha's practices in Nanjing. Try to paint a rooster after one of the samples he did that most appeals to you. 

2) Watch Henry and Prof Budde's workshops on rooster painting in Wisconsin and follow the procedure of charcoal sketching, ink work and color washing(optional).

 

Diagrams and finished paintings seen in the video are included in the handouts.
