Class Description: Moss Rose (Portulaca) Gongbi Painting Class with Victoria Li

In the aftermath of recent wildfires that have touched so many lives, this class offers an opportunity to reflect on the resilience of nature and the human spirit. The Moss Rose (Portulaca), known in Chinese as “Never Die” (死不了), symbolizes perseverance and renewal. Its vibrant colors and ability to thrive even in harsh conditions remind us of the beauty and strength that emerge after adversity.

In this 3.5-hour session, we will use the boneless gongbi technique to bring this remarkable flower to life. Participants will learn:

• How to create harmonious compositions inspired by the Moss Rose done by master Tian, Shiguang.
• Techniques for layering color to capture the flower’s vibrant hues and delicate textures.
• Methods for blending colors to reflect the spirit of renewal and natural beauty.

This class is dedicated to celebrating the recovery and growth that follow challenges, with the Moss Rose serving as a symbol of hope and beauty in resilience.

Materials Needed:

• Gongbi painting kit: fine-liner and wash brushes, Chinese painting colors, ink, and paper (use sized Cicada Wing rice paper, or semi-sized bamboo paper are recommended). 
• LED Lightbox (optional).
