Join Victoria for a special Gongbi fine-line painting workshop dedicated to the majestic carp. In Chinese culture, the carp is an enduring symbol of perseverance, strength, and transformation. Often depicted leaping against the current, it represents the courage to overcome obstacles and the ultimate achievement of ambition.
In this 3.5-hour class, Victoria will guide you through the meticulous Gongbi process, from transferring a refined line drawing to inking with ultra-fine brushes and building up transparent color washes. You will learn the art of controlling contour lines with the precision of silk threads, and how to layer mineral and plant-based pigments to achieve the depth, iridescent volume, and subtle shading that bring the carp’s scales to life. We will focus on the fluid movement of the fish, the tension of its leap, and the delicate interaction between the subject and the surrounding water.
Alongside painting, Victoria will introduce the calligraphic title “鯉躍龍門” (Lǐ Yuè Lóng Mén)—"The Carp Leaps Over the Dragon Gate." She will explain the poetic legend behind this phrase, which symbolizes academic success, career advancement, and significant personal achievement. You will see demonstrations of writing this four-character phrase in major calligraphic styles, so you can choose a style that best complements the energy of your finished painting.
This class is suitable for both beginners and experienced artists: newcomers can follow the clear, step-by-step demonstrations, while returning students can deepen their mastery of fine linework, multi-layer washes, and the integration of calligraphy and imagery in the Gongbi tradition. By the end of the workshop, you will complete an elegant painting, signed with your own calligraphy, ready to display as a symbol of aspiration and success.
