The Chinese title 同枝相依 (Tóng Zhī Xiāng Yī) may be understood as “Leaning Together on One Branch.” Beyond the literal image of two birds sharing a perch, 相依 suggests mutual reliance—staying close, supporting one another, and finding comfort in companionship.

Painted in the expressive Xieyi (寫意) tradition of Chinese brush painting, the owls are suggested through spontaneous layers of light and dark ink rather than meticulously described feather by feather. Soft washes and broken brushwork allow their plumage to merge, while stronger calligraphic strokes in the branch provide structure and contrast. The interplay of pale and dark ink echoes the subject itself: just as the two young owls depend upon one another, light and dark depend upon each other to bring the painting to life.
