Description: Experience the exquisite quality of our 3-thread, 100% silk fabric, specifically crafted for Gongbi, the traditional Chinese style of elaborate painting. This premium silk boasts a uniform texture with no distinguishable front or back side, ensuring a seamless painting experience.
Color and Absorbency: While we strive for the utmost color accuracy, please be aware that the actual shade of the silk may slightly differ from the images displayed. Our silk is meticulously treated with an alum solution, a traditional process that significantly enhances its anti-insect and anti-fungus properties. Furthermore, this treatment bestows an anti-smearing quality to the silk, making it exceptionally suitable for the precise and intricate techniques essential in Gongbi painting.
Origin: Proudly made in Hu Zhou, Zhejiang Province, China, this silk is a testament to the region's renowned craftsmanship.
Customer Inquiry & Advice: "I recently purchased this silk for Gongbi painting from BHA and it's wonderful! However, the silk tends to wrinkle when I paint. Should I mount it before painting? I've found little information online about this process."
Response: For an optimal Gongbi painting experience, there's no need to mount the silk on an additional surface. Pinning the silk onto a wooden frame using push pins, similar to preparing a canvas, is a great option for larger pieces (for guidance on this method, check out our helpful YouTube tutorial on how to stretch the silk properly). However, for smaller works—such as the computer paper size practices in Victoria's class—stretching is not necessary. In fact, Victoria never stretches the silk during her painting demos or pre-class studies. Because excessive wet washing can still cause slight buckling even when the silk is stretched, the real key to success is using the "two brush technique." By using a damp sponge brush to wash, you can easily avoid color puddles and maintain a beautiful, smooth finish on your silk.
