Join Victoria Li in this captivating Gongbi Chinese brush painting workshop focused on Sunflower Blooms. As we delve into the intricacies of sunflower art, we will also explore the profound symbolism behind these blossoms. Sunflowers, with their striking yellow petals and their unwavering tendency to face the sun, represent vitality, positivity, and growth. They embody the captivating beauty of nature and evoke the uplifting spirit of the summer season.

In this workshop, you will have the opportunity to express your unique artistic interpretation of sunflowers and bring their qualities to life on rice paper. Through delicate brushstrokes and intricate detailing, you will capture the essence of sunflower blooms, celebrating their symbolic significance.

The workshop will commence with a session on Chinese calligraphy, where we will learn to write the phrase "花開向陽" (Huā kāi xiàng yáng) in traditional characters. This phrase translates to "Flowers Blooming Towards the Sun." We will study the proper brushstrokes and techniques required to write this phrase beautifully.

Following the calligraphy session, our skilled instructor will guide you through the step-by-step process of creating a stunning sunflower painting using the Gongbi technique. You will learn how to carefully depict the vibrant yellow petals and the intricate details of sunflower blooms, capturing their radiant beauty on paper.

During the class, we will delve into the fundamentals of Gongbi painting, including brush control, color mixing, and layering. You will learn how to create depth and dimension in your artwork, bringing the sunflowers to life with precision and finesse. Our instructor will provide in-class support, offering guidance and answering any questions you may have.

No prior experience in Chinese brush painting or calligraphy is required to participate in this workshop. All skill levels are welcome, from beginners eager to explore a new artistic medium to experienced painters looking to refine their techniques. To prepare for the class, please gather the following materials: liner and wash brushes, Marie's Chinese painting colors, and sized Xuan rice paper.

The workshop will take place on July 25, Tuesday, 2023, from 9:00 am to 12:30 pm PST (3.5 hours), equivalent to 12 pm East, 4 pm UK, and 5 pm Europe. The class will be conducted via Zoom and recorded for future reference. Please ensure registration to receive class handouts and the Zoom access code ahead of the session. All registrants will be provided with a link to download or review the class recording with no time restrictions. You are also encouraged to submit a copy of your finished practice for critique.
