Bridge the gap between digital design and traditional brushwork.
This Japanese-style Masa Xuan paper (made in China) is specially treated to offer the authentic look and feel of handmade rice paper while being sturdy enough to feed through standard home printers. It is the perfect surface for artists, card makers, and calligraphers who want to combine modern printing convenience with the soul of Chinese art.
Why Artists Love It:
Printer Friendly: Designed for computer printing, it works well with most inkjet and laser printers. Perfect for printing greeting cards, certificates, digital line art, and templates.
Authentic Surface: Features an off-white tone with a soft, handmade appearance. It is "semi-sized" (low absorbency), allowing for clean printing while still accepting traditional Sumi ink and watercolor washes beautifully.
Versatile: Excellent for sumi-e, light watercolor, calligraphy, marbling, and printmaking. You can print a digital outline and then paint over it with traditional wet media.
Henry’s Tech Tip: The "Ghost Template" Method
Combine modern technology with traditional practice!
Did you know you can use this Masa paper to create your own study guides from your favorite masterpieces? Because this paper is thin yet durable, it is the perfect surface for what I call the "Ghost Template" method.
Important: This is different from a Western "coloring book" outline. The goal is to create a pale Xieyi underpainting—preserving the "bone" (brush rhythms) and "flesh" (wash shapes) in light gray—so you can write your own fresh strokes on top.
How it works:
The Setup: Take a photo of a painting you want to study (like a Qi Baishi shrimp or a Xu Beihong horse).
The AI Assist: Upload that photo to an AI tool (like Google Gemini or ChatGPT) and use this specific prompt:
"Generate a very faint, light gray ink wash version of this painting. Remove all color and keep the background pure white. Keep the original brush shapes and washes, but lower the contrast so it prints as a pale ‘ghost’ image. Focus on the main brush rhythms and broken lines, not on hard outlines. Remove all calligraphy and seals so this looks like a subtle tracing guide for Chinese brush painting."
The Print: Load this Masa Xuan Paper into your printer (print on the shiny/smooth side).
Settings: Print in B&W / Grayscale. If possible, set your printer density to "Light" or "Draft."
Pro Tip: If the template prints too dark, use a photo editor to reduce the image opacity to 40–60% before printing.
The Practice: You now have a faint gray guide on authentic rice paper! Use your brush and ink to paint directly over the template. Focus on adding the dark ink structure and color washes yourself.
