It is time to paint goats to welcome 2015, year of the Goat! This lesson includes three painting projects. First, Henry shows you how to do a colorful Sanyang Kaitai painting with three goats to symbolize an auspicious beginning of the new year; second, Datong Xu demonstrates a painting called Xi Yangyang wishing your coming new year be filled with joy, with two goats and a magpie in pure sumi style; and finally, watch how Henry turns an accidental ink blob into a running goat which will bring you good luck in the coming year!

Video Length: 1.5 Hours

Assignments

1) Please compare the four goats painting by Southern Song Dynasty artist Chen Juzhong and the three goats painting by the 20th century master Master Kong Xiaoyu(1899-1984) with Henry's copy done in this class. Try to understand how important it is to copy the masterpieces from the ancient to contemporary artists as our first step in in learning traditional CBP. Please identify the differences among these three paintings and write a critique. Then, try to make a three goat painting after Kong Xiaoyu's with your own interpretation.

2)For those of us who have taken the horse lesson from Datong last year must familiar with his approach to painting animals in ink and water. He'd start with a light ink sketch and then highlight the details with darker ink. Please try to follow his steps in making your own two goats with magpie . My advise is trying to stop at 70% or before you think it is finished to avoid over doing it. Also please leave lots of empty space in the composition as Datong does.

3) Be creative to experiment with plexiglass rubbing or any other special effect in create the wool texture of the goat or sheep body. Hint: there are many techniques you can borrow from landscape painting as well as birds and flower paintings in painting goat furs.

Diagrams and finished paintings seen in the video are included in the handouts.
