Lesson 40: Peaches of Longevity

(*To join Henry Li's online Chinese brush painting class, please click here . )

In this lesson I will teach you how to paint Peaches of Longevity as my tribute to my mother's 90th birthday. Thank Erin OConner for allowing me to videotape the entire painting process in her private class on January 5, 2015. The idea of this birthday present was originated from my brother Xiaohua, who happened to visit US to attend an international conference in late January and has taken this special scroll back home with our birthday greetings to our beloved mother in China. Peach in CBP is called "peach of longevity" symbolize longevity in traditional Chinese cultural. The peaches of longevity are usually painted in large size with green leaves and hidden branches, giving strong visual impact in impressionistic style. The peaches always painted in couple, meaning that good things always come in double, or in many with multiple peaches. In Chinese mythology, it was said that the fruit tree of longevity peach "blooms every 3000 years, and bear fruit once 3000 years. Therefore peach painting convey the fulfillment of good luck in traditional Chinese culture and expressing the great wish of longevity as birthday present to one's elderly parents or grandparents. (Please note that Peach of Longevity is NOT suitable for people who are having their birthdays younger than the 60th.)
